Run automated tasks with Agent Mode skills

View as Markdown

Agent Mode skills are built-in tasks you run from the Agent Mode chat in Postman. Each skill combines one or more Agent Mode tools with specific configurations to complete a task, such as creating a workspace from a description. To learn how to use Agent Mode, see Get started or read the Agent Mode overview.

Agent Mode skills run only inside Postman. They’re different from the agent skills for coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor, which are files your coding agent loads from your project or its own configuration. You install those with the Postman plugin for coding agents or the Postman CLI’s postman init command, which installs them under postman/skills/. To see what each one does, see Postman plugin skills.

To use an Agent Mode skill, do the following:

  1. In the Agent Mode chat, enter the slash character (/). Agent Mode gives you a popup menu of skills to choose from.

  2. Select a skill from the menu. Agent Mode answers with a prompt that starts with the skill name and includes placeholders for the inputs that the skill needs.

  3. Replace any placeholders within the prompt, in the following way:

    • For placeholders that start with the “at” character (@): Tab to or click the placeholder to open the menu, and select the desired collection, environment, or API specification from the menu.

    • For plain placeholders (those that don’t start with @): Tab to or click the placeholder and enter your desired text. Examples of this type of placeholder include new workspace name and project description.

  4. Press the return key. Agent Mode will take it from there.

If a skill doesn’t run as expected, see Troubleshoot Agent Mode.
